What is spyware?
The term Spyware is used to refer to a program or plug-in that monitors computer activity without user knowledge or consent. Such applications typically track internet browsing habits, clog system resources with benign or unwanted processes and advertisements, tamper with system settings, and even log keystrokes entered onto the computer, thereby gaining direct access to sensitive information including passwords, credit card numbers and online bank account details.
How does spyware get on your PC?
Spyware applications may be installed in one of several ways. All cases demonstate an attempt
to take advantage of the unsuspecting user.
- By disguising themselves as useful applications such as simple calendar software or clock synchronizing utilities. Such applications typically have ulterior objectives that are not directly divulged told to the user.
- By installing as part of various applications such as peer to peer or online gaming programs.
- By taking advantage of security flaws in the operating system, internet browser, and e-mail messaging client.
